As safety professionals, we’ve found we can make the greatest impact in an organization by working with leadership to realize their responsibilities regarding safety and develop a business strategy for mitigating risk. In our experience, there is an abundance of safety training and leadership training, but they tend to be mutually exclusive. As your partner in safety, our goal is to create an opportunity to intertwine the two, allowing good leadership practices to form the foundation of a successful risk management program.

Risk Management for Leaders Certificate Series

We’re launching our 6-part Risk Management for Leaders Certificate Series for individuals responsible for their company’s safety program to learn to create a safer workplace. We reference several outstanding safety and leadership resources throughout the series, including Safety by Objectives by Dan Petersen, People Work by Kevin Burns, the Fearless Organization by Amy C. Edmondson, Practical Loss Control Leadership by Bird & Germain, Simon Sinek, Brene Brown, National Safety Council and OSHA. To establish the outline for this series, we identified the five most essential principles among these resources necessary for safety leaders to succeed.

Here’s what we discuss during our training series:

  1. Commitment to Safety – explores a leader’s commitment to safety at a deeper level, outlining what’s at stake in the workplace and what it takes to demonstrate safety leadership through actions.
  2. Cultural Impact on Safety – dives into a leader’s responsibility to set expectations, establish the organization’s risk tolerance, and positively influence their safety culture.
  3. Team Engagement – discusses creating ownership, opportunities for team participation and feedback, accountability, and an atmosphere of psychological safety in the workplace.
  4. Continuous Improvement – reviews creating a growth mindset in the workplace and concepts for continuous hazard assessment and program improvement such as job hazard analysis, safety observations, and accident investigations.
  5. Communication and Transparency – The final and most important presentation of the series.  We discuss learning styles, training, communication concepts, and methods to confirm understanding.

This series is intended for leaders or future leaders interested in growing their leadership skills and creating a solid foundation for their risk management program and team. Each presentation will be accompanied by supporting materials, recorded and available on Safety OnDemand. After completing the 6-part series, either live or recorded, each participant will receive a certificate of completion from ICW Group. Register today!
